Blue Lake Wines vineyard is located on the Eastern slopes of Mount Gambier’s famous Blue Lake – hence the name!
The vineyard was established by Darryl and Maureen Whitehead in 1996 and planted to Pinot Noir, Merlot, Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc.
We aim to produce low yields of premium quality fruit to produce intense varietal wines.
Our agricultural practices are consciously aimed at sustainability for the long term with very minimal use of herbicide (we use sheep instead for most of the year), fertilisers used are derived from natural products where possible, and we do not irrigate our vines.

History:
In 1996 we planted our first 9 hectares of Pinot Noir, followed by another 3.5 hectares of vines in 1998. The last three hectares are made up of equal quantities of Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Merlot.
Our vineyard is situated on the western slopes of Mount Gambier near the famous Blue Lake. It is the prefect site for low yielding, premium cool climate varietals. Out soils are volcanic loam over limestone.
We sell all Pinot Noir to other producers but keep a small amount of the other varieties to make into wine to sell ourselves.
We had our first Merlot made in 2003, and have continued on with that since. 2006 saw the first of our Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier bottled.

Wines:
Blue Lake Merlot 2003
Dry grown, low yielding vines have produced an elegant wine with concentrated blood plum fruit flavours. The wine fills the mouth with a round, elegant palate and leaves a lingering richness. Drink with rich meat dishes, Asian food and cheeses. Drink now but cellar up to ten years if you can!

Blue Lake Sauvignon Blanc 2006
This is a refreshing and immensely fruity Sauvignon Blanc. The palate is refreshing and Moorish with flavours of kiwifruit, passionfruit, lemon, and a hint of cut grass and fresh herbs. Serve chilled as an aperitif or as an accompaniment to light and spicy foods

Blue Lake Viognier 2006
A very rich wine, but with a refreshing palate. Flavours of lychee and lemon blossom give a slightly savoury creaminess with overtones of dried apricots. Delightful to drink chilled by itself or with a range of lighter foods
